20-Year-Old Driver Identified in Fatal Salem Township Crash

SALEM TWP. — The coroner has identified one of the two men killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday morning in Salem Township, Wayne County.

According to a release issued Friday by the Wayne County Coroner's Office, 20-year-old Kyle J. Babernitsh of Beaufort, South Carolina, was the driver of an SUV that left the roadway and struck a utility pole at the intersection of Hamlin Highway (Route 590) and Mellon Road.

Chief Deputy Coroner Mark M. James responded to the scene and pronounced Babernitsh dead at 7:23 a.m.

A male passenger in the SUV was transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the passenger.

An autopsy on Babernitsh is scheduled for Monday, June 15. The cause and manner of death remain pending investigation.

The Pennsylvania State Police at Honesdale and the Wayne County Coroner's Office continue to investigate the crash. No additional details have been released.
